Inclusion and participation are important social values, but they are often insufficiently implemented or facilitated. Many public places and the transport infrastructure to get there are not or only partially accessible. Wheelchair users are only able to obtain up-to-date and correct information on accessibility to a limited extent. The level of detail of accessibility information on digital maps is also often inadequate.

The core objective of this project is to analyze the existing barriers for wheelchair users in everyday life. The results of the analysis will be digitally processed by the Institute for Mobility and Infrastructure in Rural Areas at Furtwangen University as a project partner and made available via appropriate interfaces. We will desing a tracking system to collected and recorded the necessary image and geodata. An AI-based system will processe and analyze the data to detect surface characteristics of locations.

Initially, we will examine existing the usability of low-threshold technologies, such as smartphone cameras and develop, if necessary, a dedicated tracking system for data recording. We will adapt the AI-based analysis to the requirements of the project, specifically to detect common barriers in everyday life for wheelchair users. We will evaluate the system for usability by wheelchair users

The project result will enable people in wheelchairs to digitally view the accessibility and condition of individual streets and locations and record them themselves using simple technologies. Once the project results have been passed on to the relevant local authorities, they will serve as a basis for the planning and further development of urban and rural infrastructure and can therefore contribute to increasing the accessibility and inclusion of public locations.
